From "Exit Wounds":

Andy: Rhys what are you doing here? This is a crime scene, and a confidential crime scene at that. If it gets out what happened here they'll be a city-wide panic.
Gwen: Rhys isn't going to blab.
Rhys: I'm keeping more secrets than you'd ever believe.
Andy: Yeah right. Like what?
Rhys: Like a Time Agency based in Cardiff.
Gwen: Oh, it's not based in Cardiff.
Andy: Brilliant secret. I ask, you tell. Well done.

Prompt #240: Discuss an individual who scared you

Rogue's Gallery

Gwen sat on Jack's desk, as she liked to do after a long day. "Of all the people you've ever met, who frightens you most?"

He thought. "The Master."

"Master of what?"

"Nothing, any more."  He grinned. "Not since his cremation."

"So why'd he scare you?"

"Because... he made someone I admire love him.  I couldn't stop him.  Couldn't do anything about it."  He shrugged. "It's history now, but it gives me cold sweats to remember.  What about you?  Who do you fear most?"

Prompt #238: Freudian Slip

Sometimes Gwen drove Rhys crazy, but the sex was good.  The sex was always good.  Even after they had a row, and sometimes especially after they'd had a row.  Gwen was all fire and sparks, a powerhouse of a woman in bed. She mixed laughter with passion and both with kindness, and even though she sometimes drove him crazy or worse, but he felt infinitely lucky to have her in his life. Of all the men in the world, including bloody Jack Harkness, she'd chosen him to marry.  Rhys had no idea what he'd done to deserve it, some insane sort of Karma.  If ever he'd had a fairy godmother... the sexual kind... She'd done better by him than most.  A night like this, and he didn't care about the missed dinners, the forgotten dates, the fact that they hadn't been bowling in months. Or seen a movie. Or visited family or friends.  Her life was Torchwood now.  Torchwood, and Rhys.

When she was very young, she wanted to live with her grandmother.  Her house smelled of baking and laundry and caring.  Her books were battered and old, but as friendly as the old upholstery and the potted plants.  It was a wonderful place to be.

"Sometimes I wish I'd never destroyed the pendant," said Toshiko.  Her quiet, serious eyes were shadowed with some difficult memory. They were eating lunch in the Torchwood board room, just the two of them.  Tosh usually wasn't inclined to talk, least of all about herself, and Gwen loved it when she did.  "I know it was a terrible thing, to eavesdrop on people's thoughts.  I'd never do that again.  But that isn't the point.  I don't want it for its powers. I want it because it's the only thing I had of hers."

It was not a game: it was a war.

When she was sixteen, Gwen had been in the school Chess Club for a few months, because she'd fancied Nigel Jenkins, the club president. After a while she discovered that he had a thing for Jenny Underwriter, who was a twit, and chess wasn't much fun anyway. So that was that.

20.2 - Apologies

  1. Suzie: I'm sorry I took your place at Torchwood, and made it my place. I like to think I have proved myself, and have done better than you - I maybe didn't crack the secret of the transdimensional modifier like you did, but I haven't gone mad and gone on a killing spree, either.
  2. Carys, I'm sorry I couldn't prevent what happened to you.  Being  abused by a pervert isn't any better when the pervert is an alien.
  3. Ed Morgan, I'm sorry I didn't see you go to prison as you should have.
  4. Ianto, I'm sorry Lisa was destroyed by the Cybermen.  So very, very sorry.
  5. Jasmine, I'm sorry we couldn't keep you safe and living among humans. I hope you are truly happy in the realm the fairies have taken you to.
  6. Evan, I'm sorry I can't make you suffer the kind of fear you made your victims suffer.
  7. Owen, I'm sorry I used you for comfort and release without offering the kind of love that might have made your life better.
  8. Toshiko, I'm sorry Mary wasn't the love you deserve.
  9. Mr Costello, I'm sorry I brought your daughter to see you in the hospital.  It seemed like such a normal thing for her to want. I had no idea she wanted to hurt you, too.
  10. Eugene, I'm sorry I didn't listen when you were alive to talk.
  11. John Ellis, I'm sorry I couldn't protect you from the world of 2008.  I didn't notice that you needed protection.
  12. Janet, I'm sorry I've never been able to understand the needs of your fierce, telepathic race.
  13. Jack, I'm sorry I didn't do something about Bilis before he could meddle with the Rift.  I thought we were helping, bringing you back to the present and protecting the world.
  14. But I'm not sorry I kissed you and restored you to life again.  We need you.  We really do.
  15. Captain John, I'm sorry I hate you, but I think you're a first-class bastard and Jack just thinks otherwise because you have him fooled.
  16. Beth, I'm sorry that your life was destroyed by aliens and that we couldn't do anything to prevent it.  I'm particularly sorry that we let you escape to kill your poor husband. I know how that hurt you.
  17. Tommy, I'm sorry we could do nothing to save you from the Great War.
  18. Alien space-whale, I'm sorry that the only kindness humanity could offer you was death.  You should be singing among the stars.
  19. Martha, I'm sorry I don't get a chance to see you more often. I think we could be friends.
  20. Owen, I'm sorry I couldn't help you deal with your own death, but that's foreign territory for me. And it scares me.
  21. Mr. Parker, I'm sorry you couldn't find what you were looking for - a longer life,  an end to loneliness.
  22. Mother-in-law Dearest, I'm sorry my friend Jack called you an ugly bitch to your face.  Yes, I know the truth hurts. I'm also sorry I laughed.  And  you know, maybe I ought to be sorry I'm not the perfect daughter-in-law, but the truth is, I don't care, because no daughter-in-law could possibly please you.
  23. To all the people we failed to save from the Night Travellers: I'm sorry, so very sorry.  You deserved life.
  24. To Nikki: I'm sorry that finding your son brought you more pain than sorrow.
  25. Jack, Tosh, Owen and Ianto: I'm sorry I slept late that day when you were caught in the explosions set by Captain John.  It worked out in the end - Rhys and I were able to help - but I should have been there for you, should have been able to make events go differently.
  26. Tosh, Owen: I'm sorry I couldn't save you. I'll never forget you.
  27. Andy, I'm sorry I can't get you work at Tochwood.  Really, you're a wonderful policeman, you do so much for Cardiff, it's where you belong.
  28. Rhys, I'm sorry I'm not home more. I love you.

A few days after Tosh and Owen died, Jack found Gwen crying silently in the autopsy room, cross-legged on the floor.  Without a word, he sat beside her, and gathered her into his arms.

After a while she subsided and he said softly to her, "Yeah. Me too."  His breath tickled her left ear.
